About Ecuador
Ecuador, located in the northwestern part of South America, is a geographically diverse country
known for its rich landscapes, historical heritage, and unique biodiversity. It shares borders with
Colombia to the north, Peru to the south and east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Ecuador covers
an area of approximately 283,561 square kilometers (109,484 square miles).
The geography of Ecuador is divided into four main regions: the coastal lowlands, the Andean
highlands, the Amazon rainforest, and the Galápagos Islands.
The coastal region (La Costa) lies along the Pacific Ocean and consists of fertile plains,
mangroves, and beautiful beaches. This area has a warm climate and is ideal for agriculture,
especially for crops like bananas, cocoa, and coffee. Major cities such as Guayaquil, Ecuador’s
largest city and main port, are located here.
The Andean highlands (La Sierra) feature towering mountains, deep valleys, and active volcanoes,
including Cotopaxi, one of the world’s highest active volcanoes. The capital city, Quito, sits at an
altitude of 2,850 meters (9,350 feet) above sea level. The region is home to indigenous communities
that preserve traditional customs, music, and festivals.
The Amazon rainforest (La Amazonía), located in the eastern part of the country, is covered by dense
forests and winding rivers. This area is rich in biodiversity, with numerous species of wildlife and
plants. Indigenous groups have lived here for centuries, maintaining a deep connection with nature.
The Galápagos Islands, located about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) off the coast, are famous for
their unique wildlife, including giant tortoises and marine iguanas. This archipelago inspired
Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.
Ecuador’s diverse geography has shaped its culture, economy, and history, making it a fascinating
and unique destination.
